Tourist Attractions in Joginder Nagar

There are several picnic points in Joginder Nagar, that provide opportunities for enjoying scenic beauty and various adventurous activities like para gliding and trekking etc. You can also see many ancient temples in and around the town.

Winch Camp

Winch Camp, 7 km away from Joginder Nagar, is located at an altitude of 8, 000 feet. You can reach there on riding through Haulage way car or by trekking. Trekking may take around four hours and it is a bit tiring. Haulage way system in Jogindernagar is perahps its only kind of track in the world. The haulage way car starts at the base station at Buffer stop in Shanan Power house at 8.30 am and reaches Winch Camp nearby 10 am. But special permissions from the authority of shaman Power House is required to ride haulage way car because outsiders are not allowed.

You can see thick forests of Rhododendron (locally known as brah ka fool), which is used to prepare delicious sauce that have medicinal use. People can see kilometers of distance including Mandi Hills, Beas River, Kangra district and Hamirpur boundaries etc from this place. Lots of local people, tourists, students of schools and colleges step to this mountain to watch the gorgeous snowfall that may even
scales up to 2 feet or above during some winter season.

There is another haulage way station on the other side of the mountain, Headgear. It is at an altitude of 8, 300 feet. It is a nice experience to watch outstanding scenery of 16,000 feet high Himalayan ranges including Dhaladhar from this place. The haulage way car, from Headgear, gets down Khooni Ghati, the steep hill having a large gradient. The literal meaning of this name is ‘Valley of death’. Several accidents happened here in the past give Khooni Ghati this name. Katheru, set up at an altitude of 7,000 feet above sea level, is the next station. Zero point at 6, 050 feet is also next to this place.

As there are no restaurants or shops near around Winch camp, tourists have to carry sufficient food with them. There is a rest-house here that is available at free cost for higher officials, who visit this place. Government is constructing a rest house near Fooladhar village, which is half kilometer from this site.

Chaprot

Chaprot, 10 km away from Joginder Nagar, is a popular picnic location and hangout spot. It is located on Siyuri Dhar mountain range. There is a small reservoir for Bassi Power house here. The place gives the view of whole Joginder Nagar valley. Even though there is a government rest house, it is available only for officials. A single lane road branches off towards Chaprot from the national highway 20 at Shanan.

Herbal Garden and Museum

Situated just 0.5 km away from the bus stand, it is the largest herbal garden in North India. This Herbal Museum, which is dedicated to all rare herbs, also gives us a lot of information about herbal plants, other plants of medicinal use and rare herbs.

Machyal Lake

Machyal Lake is a small lake at a distance of 8 km from Joginder Nagar town. It is held sacred to Machendru Devta, which means the God of Fish. Machyal Lake is formed by the stream-water of a small river named Gugli Khad. As Fish in the lake are worshipped here, especially on Saturdays and Tuesdays, fishing is strictly prohibited in this lake. There is also a fair celebrated here in the month of April every year. There is also a bridge near this lake over Gugli Khadd. Machyal is the point where the water of Uhl River from Bassi Power House meets into Gugli Khadd. Other attraction here is some beautiful temples of Machendru Devta with idols of God of Fish. These temples are lying beside the lake. Swimming in Machyal lake is a thrilling experience and lots of people visit this place throughout the year to enjoy swimming here.

Narrow Gauge Railway

The journey through the narrow gauge Railway is a quite interesting experience, as the rail goes thorugh other beautiful hill resorts namely Palampur, Kangra and Baijnath. There are two train services in the morning at 7 am and 12 pm towards Pathankot from this station. The railway platform lies in the midst of Joginder Nagar town. You can have a journey though it up to 163 km distance station at Pathankot for just 60 bucks.

Barot

Hotels in JogindarnagarBarot is an exotic hill station, which is at a 1.5 hour drive from Joginder Nagar town at 25 km off National High way 20. You have to divert at a village named Ghatsani, which is 14 km away from Joginder Nagar and 35 km away from Mandi, to reach Barot. This bye road passes through Tikkan and Jhatingri along the Uhl River till Barot. Barot is connected to other major cities like Palampur, Joginder Nagar and Mandi through public bus services.

Barot is a perfect day tourist destination and many tourists visit this place to enjoy and relax in the serene surroundings. You can also see the main reservoirs on Uhl River for Shanan and Bassi hydel projects here. Located at a height of 1820 meters, this place is also ideal for various activities like angling, trekking, camping and fishing etc. Several trekking trails including trails to Manali, Kullu and Bada Bhangal pass through Barot. There are also a few fish farms in this hill station. The Uhl river supports Trout breeding here.

Nagru Wildlife Sanctuary

Nagru Wildlife Sanctuary, which is stretched across the Uhl river throughout Barot valley, covers a total area of 278 sq.km. The sanctuary starts from the Tikkan village towards Barot and Chota Bhangal area. There are many types of species here like western tragopan (monal), snow leopard, black bear and ghoral. The route to reach Nagru Wildlife Sanctuary is same that to Barot.

Bir-Billing

Bir-Billing is one of the best paragliding spots in Himachal Pradesh and it offers several adventurous activities for tourists. It is the hang-gliding take-off location for Paragliding Pre-World Cup and other international level tournaments such as Himalayan Cup. Bir is the nearby town where you can see lots of Tibetan Budhist monasteries in Bir. Most of the people in this town are Tibetan people who were inhabited here in exile.

Jhatingri

Jhatingri is a beautifull hill resort situated at a height of 2100 meters, 25 km away from Joginder Nagar town. Surrounded by thick pine forests, this place offers spectacular scenery to the visitors. A long ride towards the town of Mandi, Joginder Nagar, Bir-Billing from this place is thrilling. But, you may have to arrange a professional paraglider for yourself because you may not get them most of the times in Jhatingri.

Lakshmi Narayana Temple

Lord Lakshmi Narayana Temple is a hundreds of year old temple located in a nearby village called Ner, which is 6 km away from Jogindernagar. It was built by Pandavas and it is said that Lord Vishnu had meditated in this place for 500 years. Once an industrialist dreamed meeting God and God said him to take care of the temple. He donated thousands of rupees to repair this temple. The old architectural style and idols that carved out on the outer walls of the temple is worth seeing. It is said that the idol of God moved inches from its original place on that night and the bells began ringing automatically. We can reach to Lakshmi Narayana Temple through state highway 19 towards Sarkaghat.

Baijnath Temple

Temples in JogindarnagarBaijnath homes an exquisite temple in which Lord Shiva is worshipped as Vaidyanath “The Lord of Physicians”. This place is situated 20 km away from Joginder Nagar town. The original temple here was built in AD 804. King Ravana is said to have supplicated Lord Shiva here for this boon of immortality.

Banderi Temple: Banderi temple is located on the hill to the north-west of Joginer Nagar.

Tarangini Mahadev: It is a holy place dedicated to Lord Shiva. Loacated near Yora, on the way to Bhalaridha, Tarangini Mahadev is the merging point of three water streams. This three streams merge to form Rana Khadd, a major water stream at this place.

Mata Chaturbhuja Temple: Situated nearby Bassi Dhar village, Mata Chaturbhua Temple is one of the oldest temples of the town.

Baba Balakrupi Temple: It is a temple dedicated to Goddess Parvati and it is located in Bhanker Village.

Mata Maheshwari Temple: This temple also situated in Bhanker village and dedicated to Goddess Parvati.
